How does your microbiome control your immunity?

“Control of Immunity by the Microbiota”- the seemingly audacious title of a new scientific paper. ⁣
⁣
Yet these are no “alternative medicine” researchers – the paper is co-authored by scientists from the University of Oxford and the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. ⁣
⁣
What exactly do they mean?⁣
⁣
According to their paper:⁣
⁣
– Your resident microbes are “in a constant dialogue with the immune system”⁣
– Microbes in your digestive tract and elsewhere affect both innate and adaptive immunity (aka your first line defense, and germ-specific defense)⁣
– Cross-talk between microbes in your immune system during childhood help to establish your long-term immune function⁣
– An unhealthy microbiome can lead to inflammation and disease, in large part via the immune system⁣
⁣
This and other similar papers are why I would argue that your microbiome is your immune system’s ally. Or it can be, when it’s healthy. Any why it’s important to tend to your microbial “garden” through food and lifestyle. And why it’s not wise to broadly dismiss the old Hippocratic adage “all disease begins in the gut”.⁣
