A specific type of probiotic (Bifidobacterium animalis subspecies lactis HN019) in lozenge form may improve symptoms of periodontal disease (in conjunction with other oral healthcare interventions). Given the connections between oral health and systemic chronic diseases (like heart disease and autoimmunity), it pays to do what we can to maintain health in our mouth.
In this recent study, 15 patients used these probiotic lozenges for 30 days. Compared with the control group, those using the lozenges experienced reduced plaque and gingival bleeding.
The probiotic also reduced the ability of P. gingivalis (a primary bacteria involved in periodontal disease) to stick to the gums. It also demonstrated antimicrobial properties against P. gingivalis (many other probiotics have similar antimicrobial effects against harmful species via the bacteriocins they produce).
Have you tried any probiotic lozenges?
